Feeling Funky? Here's How to Change That ASAP!

It can strike at any moment. That dreaded dark cloud that descends out of nowhere. One moment you’re in your flow and feeling good in your own skin. And now you’re in a drowning wave of “stuck”. Makes you wanna scream, right?!

A funk might be triggered by what someone else did or didn’t say or do, or from some deep recess of your thinking. Where it came from doesn’t matter - how to get rid of a funk, ASAP, does. Effective mind-body tools are something I swear by whenever I feel myself slipping out of my groove and I’ve definitely got a goodie for you here.

The following process is the fastest way I know to break a negative spiral and get your groove back when you're feeling funky.

It was first introduced to me by the fabulous Elizabeth DiAlto of untameyourself.com and is definitely one of my go-to tools. It's an easy 5-part process that brings immediate results and is something I know you’ll love:

1) Begin by taking 5 deep breaths

Breathe deeply into the core of your belly, hold it there and then breathe slowly out through your nose. If you’re doing this laying down, then imagine exhaling out of the back of your body. If you’re sitting with legs crossed, imagine exhaling out of your seat or root chakra. Or if you’re sitting in a chair with your feet on the ground, imagine exhaling out the bottom of your feet. This first step is about grounding yourself and getting out of your head and into your body.

2) Shake It Out

Decide not to focus on whatever stress or thing got you into your funk. Instead, start to shake it out. Yep, just like Taylor says. Shake out every little and big part of your body. Jump around, get a little crazy-pants (just be gentle with your head and neck) and imagine your funk shaking straight off your body.

3) Say out loud what you want or intend for your day 

With one hand on your heart and one on your belly, say out loud what it is you’d like. Instead of this funk say "I'd like... to happen" so you can physically hear it. Don’t worry about whether you “can” have it or the “how”. Just declare it out loud.

4) Verbalize some appreciations 

With one hand still on your heart and the other on your belly, say what you’re thankful for. What do you appreciate about your life?

If you can’t think of anything specific, which can certainly be the case when you’re in a funk (!) just repeat the words “Thank you, Thank you, Thank you”. Do this over and over again until you feel yourself start to soften, and that tightening in your chest or head begin to loosen.

5) Finish by clapping your hands 8 times 

Do this quickly as if you’re declaring “YES! We’re done here!” and you’re good to go – it’s that simple.

Now, here’s an optional bonus exercise to reignite your inner smile and someone else’s:

Love bomb 3 people you know 

Call, text or email them and acknowledge one wonderful thing you admire and respect about this person. Extra feel good points if it’s something they might not know about themselves.

This short practice will shift you out of your funk ASAP and have you back in your groove and merrily on your way in no time!
